Springtails or Fleas: How to Tell the Difference

Nick Siebert • December 15, 2023

Do you have tiny black bugs that look like fleas? They might be springtails.

If you’ve spotted tiny black bugs that jump, you’re probably worrying about what type of pest infestation you have. The good news is they’re not necessarily fleas. You may have springtails in the house, an ornamental bug that won’t cause any damage and is harmless to people.

But what if it’s a flea infestation?

Fleas can be dangerous, spreading disease
. In some cases, these diseases can be fatal, so you always want to ensure a flea infestation — or any type of insect — is taken care of by a professional pest removal company in Sussex County, NJ

What Do Fleas Look Like?

If you suspect fleas, look for small insects with flat bodies. On average, adult fleas are 3 mm in length. Although fleas can be hard to spot, their dropping, commonly called “flea dirt,” is easier to see.

They leave this excrement behind when they eat. As the name suggests, “flea dirt” looks like dark brown or black soil.

Fleas don’t have wings and they can’t fly. They can jump, so be mindful of this.

What Do Springtails Look Like?

Springtails range in color. They might be grey, black, or brown, but are usually dark in color. Some species of springtails are white or other bright colors, however.

Like fleas, springtails don’t have wings and as such, can’t fly. They can, however, jump a few inches, which can give them the appearance of flying.

Do Springtails Bite?

No, springtails don’t bite people or animals. They also aren’t harmful. However, they tend to come out in droves, which makes them a pest when they invade greenhouses, homes, and anywhere else with moisture.

If you see them repeatedly indoors, it means there is a moisture source nearby, so you’ll want a
pest home inspection

Luckily, springtails don’t damage any clothing, furniture, or food. They also won’t harm your property, which is why they’re called an “ornamental” bug. However, you don’t want them invading your house.

You can try spraying your property with white vinegar, targeting areas where they come inside. Just remember that the presence of pests usually points to a larger issue within the home, and springtails might mean moisture from a leak.

Do Fleas Bite?

Unlike springtails, fleas do bite.
These bites are usually itchy and can cause a rash, welts, or hives. In some cases, they can also cause a person or animal to have an allergic reaction.

Across the globe, there are more than 2,500 species of fleas. The US alone has more than 300 different flea species. Although bites are mostly annoying, fleas can transmit diseases. These diseases include Bubonic plague, Murine typhus, Tungiasis, Tularemia, and more.

Springtails or Fleas?

If you’re unsure about springtails or fleas, it’s best to call a professional. When left untreated, a small pest problem can quickly turn into a large one. Although there are some DIY options to try, you might find that pests are still infesting your home.
