What Are One-Way Exclusion Doors?

Prevent pests from entering — and reentering — your home.

If you have a wild animal in your house — commonly a raccoon, squirrel, mouse, rat, bird, or bat — then you’ve probably heard of a one-way exclusion door. These doors are perfect for removing squirrels in the attic, for example, and are a safe, humane, and effective means of ridding your property of unwanted pests.

Should you have an animal in your house, it’s best to let a professional install an exclusion door for wildlife. For starters, you may not know what a critter’s entry point looks like, whereas
a professional pest control technician is trained to recognize them. Additionally, a professional can look for other possible entry points, sealing them to prevent wildlife from re-entering.

It’s important to understand how different types of one-way exclusion doors work and how they can treat a wildlife infestation.

One-Way Squirrel Exclusion Door

If you have squirrels in the attic, it’s best to remove them as quickly as possible. Common signs include scurrying noises or scampering and scratching sounds in your attic. Since squirrels can chew your electrical wiring, they can become a fire hazard. They also chew on wood and insulation, leading to costly property damage.

Squirrels will also use your gutters, chimney, and attic to build nests, but a one-way exclusion door can humanely remove them from your property, keeping them away.

Exclusion doors allow small rodents — squirrels included — to safely exit your home. Once they’re out, the door shuts behind them. Since these doors essentially only open in one direction, the squirrel — or other critter — can’t reenter. These doors are made from wire.

One-Way Exclusion Door for Bats

A bat one-way exclusion door works similarly to a squirrel exclusion door but is commonly made from netting or tubes. Like squirrels, bats can leave, but they can’t reenter your home. Just remember that you need to rid your home of bats during the legal

Aside from carrying
rabies, bat droppings — called guano — can build up inside your attic or wherever bats are roosting. It’s common for this fecal matter to contain a host of pathogens that are hazardous to your health, especially when inhaled. Additionally, bats can cause structural damage to your home, as they gnaw on everything from your electrical wiring to your insulation and wood.

One-Way Exclusion Door for Skunks and Raccoons

Although less common, one-way exclusion doors also work for skunks and raccoons. They also work to remove small rodents, such as mice and rats, along with birds.

The concept is the same, regardless of what wild animal the exclusion door is working to remove. A
professional pest control company will inspect your home for signs of critters, installing exclusion doors as needed. Once trapped, they’ll release the wild animal far from your home, in a safe location.

Install a One-Way Exclusion Door for Pests

The beauty of exclusion doors is that you don’t have to wait for a pest problem to install them. If you have an area of your home prone to pests, you can install exclusion doors to prevent critters from entering in the first place. These doors protect possible entryways from pests, so speak to a trusted pest control company about the benefits of installing a one-way exclusion door today.
