What Kind of Bed Bugs Live Inside Walls?

Nick Siebert • November 4, 2023

Understand the different types of bed bugs.

Do bed bugs live in walls? You bet. They’ll find any little groove — any little crevice or gap in wood — and move in. They’re called bed bugs because they’re known for feasting on people when they sleep in bed at night, but they can live anywhere they please.

How can bed bugs live inside walls? Bed bugs spend their day safely nestled inside walls, away from predators. At night, they come out to eat. House spiders, centipedes,
and cockroaches all eat bed bugs, so they need somewhere to hunker down until it’s time to eat again.

If you suspect you have a bed bug infestation, there are a few things you need to know. This will help you when you contact a professional pest removal service in Sussex County, NJ.

What Are The Different Types of Bed Bugs?

There are about 90 different types of bed bugs. However, only three of them actually feed on people. They are the following:

  • Cimex lectularius
  • Cimex hemipterus
  • Leptocimex

Almost every bed bug infestation in America is caused by the Cimex lectularius.

Are Bed Bugs Dangerous?

Not necessarily.
Bed bugs aren’t a known transmitter of disease. But since they feed on people, they can cause itchy bites. You may even lose sleep because of their incessant biting.

Additionally, you may experience discomfort after any type of bed bug bite, especially if you’re scratching excessively. In some instances, this can lead to a skin infection that may require topical antibiotics, as recommended by your physician.

How to Prevent Bed Bugs

Always
clean your house thoroughly, especially if you suspect any type of pest infestation. This doesn’t mean that a dirty, cluttered house can lead to a bed bug infestation. However, when you clean your house and work to declutter it, you can work to control a bed bug infestation if you do have one in your home.

Bed bugs can enter any dwelling. If you suspect you have bed bugs, you should contact a professional
pest removal company immediately. Otherwise, the infestation can become worse.

You can also work to prevent an infestation by sealing any cracks in your home, as this eliminates the places where bed bugs can hide. It also works to prevent them from crawling from one dwelling to another, if you live in an apartment, condo, or townhouse or have other shared walls.

How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs

If you have
bed bugs, it’s important to wash all your bedding. You should also wash curtains, clothes, and machine-washable toys. If you can’t wash an item in the washing machine, then you should hand wash them and put them in the dryer on high for at least half an hour, if not longer.

Should you have infested items that you can throw out, be sure to do so immediately. You can use a steamer to get rid of bed bugs that are on mattresses, couches, or any other furniture.

If you raise the temperature on your water heater to wash clothes, remember to lower it to reduce the incidence of young children sustaining any type of burn-related injury.
